My #1 Recovery Technique: SPARKLE

I had a grand plan for my birthday this year. It was the first time I would ever plan a birthday celebration six months in advance. It would be the first time I would plan my own celebration, in fact.

It’s always nice to be a summer baby because the possibilities for outdoor birthday adventures are endless. One summer, I happened to be on a birthright trip in Israel with my two best friends – a totally unplanned birthday adventure. And as it turned out, on my actual birthday, we did a sunrise hike up to Masada (incredible!) and then rode around on some very angsty camels before eating the best baklava I’ve ever had in my life (freshly baked and dripping in syrup).

Is camel my spirit animal?

Another year, Bryce surprised me with a gorgeous coastal hike and picnic. We actually got lost on our hike and our car battery died, plus we had no cell service, but we laid on a quiet beach all day and everything felt perfect.

The Oregon Coast makes me feel like I’m in another world.

In an attempt to plan another birthday adventure, this year I decided to invite a bunch of friends to run the Mt Hood 25K trail race and camp at Timothy Lake, post-race. I couldn’t imagine a better way to ring in a new year than by conquering the mountain with my friends and then celebrating by swimming in the lake and cooking out all day.

Last month I felt like everything came to a roaring halt when I injured my outer hip and hip flexor (still figuring out what’s going on, actually). I thought, okay, this pain will go away, but it only got worse to the point I was limping and finally, I had to make the decision that this was not going to be my time to run a race. As Bryce termed it, I was benched. No running, just a lot of sitting while everyone around me got to enjoy the warm Portland weather pounding pavement and flying around on the trails.

And while I might keep boohoo-ing my inability to run, I am constantly reminded by my friends and my brilliant acupuncturist, Kate, that this is my body telling me that I need rest, more recovery, and to replenish my body (insert angsty eye roll).

So now I’m brushing myself off, enjoying more sleep since I don’t have to wake up so early for early morning cross training or on Saturdays for run club, and taking good care of myself.

Per Dr. Kate’s advice, here’s part of my new recovery regimen:

First and foremost, more WATER. Since our bodies are made of of 60% water, it’s vital to replenish the water we lose throughout the day. Water is essential to protect our joints and acts as a lubricant that helps cushion the joints and protect tissue from shock. Hello pavement pounding, you hurt me. I’m upping my water intake and on days with more physical activity, I’m drinking 90-100 oz of water.

And upping my intake could not have come at a better time…

I’m thrilled to be participating in the Gerolsteiner Sparkling Detox challenge for the third year in a row. For five days (August 27-31), I’ll be drinking all Gerolsteiner Sparkling Mineral Water, and no coffee, wine, or any other beverages that usually spark(le) my fancy.

Not only will I be hitting my water goals, I’ll also be targeting another part of my recovery regimen: Magnesium. When I read into the benefits of magnesium, I wonder why I haven’t been taking it every day my entire life. This mineral supports muscle function and is the mineral I hear everyone talking about for workout recovery. Magnesium also supports nervous system function and when taken in the evening, it can aid in a more restful night’s sleep. Oh sleep, the godfather of all recovery, and other than water, it’s the one I struggle with the most.

One liter of Gerolsteiner Sparkling Mineral Water has 25% of the suggested daily intake of magnesium. It’s also chock full of Calcium and Bicarbonate, minerals that are good for bones, muscles, and overall digestion balance.

Sip, sip, hooray for tasty bubbles that also function as a recovery method.
